Seeking a more robust defense in the event of a bioterrorist attack on the United States...to prepare the nation for such threats...the Bush administration created a $6 billion fund named "Bioshield" to prepare the nation to counter bioterrorism, including the deadly Ebola virus. The Obama administration, however, has not used the resources provided and spent at least $1 billion--actually more--on lesser priorities.But...I digress. I wanted to write this commentary about voting.Iraq’s chemical weapons are back in the news. The New York Times reported that American troops found roughly 5,000 chemical warheads, shells and aviation bombs since the Iraq War began. Then last week The Washington Post reported the Islamic State terrorist group had used chlorine gas against Iraqi police officers. What’s going on? We’ve been told “Bush lied” about Iraq having weapons of mass destruction (WMD). Now we learn they’ve been showing up in the thousands and are toxic enough to injure people. OOPS! Sorry. I really need to write about voting. Election time, you know. What is the likelihood that your vote won’t count? That your vote will, in effect, be canceled or stolen as a consequence of mistakes by election officials or fraudulent votes cast by campaign workers or ineligible voters like felons and noncitizens? Unfortunately, we can’t know. But one thing is almost certain: Voter fraud will occur. Many states run a rickety election process, lacking rules to deter people who are looking to take advantage of the system’s porous security. And too many groups and individuals—including the NAACP, the American Civil Liberties Union and U.S. Attorney General Eric Holder—are doing everything they can to prevent states from improving the integrity of the election process. You see...I can get on my desired subject. We're talking "voting" now!At a time when we are assailed from multiple nations, all wanting nothing more than the dissolution and downfall of the United States of America, some would say that we should be focused on measures which would protect our great nation and its process of governance. During Tuesday’s midterm elections, besides picking candidates, voters will weigh in on issues ranging from raising the minimum wage and legalizing marijuana to labeling genetically modified food and regulating abortion. Voters in Alaska, Oregon and the District of Columbia will vote on measures that would allow recreational use of marijuana for adults. If the questions get the high sign, the three would follow the lead of Colorado and Washington, which legalized marijuana by ballot initiative in 2012. The measures in Alaska and Oregon would allow for the retail sale of marijuana to anyone 21 or older. The D.C. measure would make it legal to grow and possess pot, but not sell it. Congress could overrule a voter decision to legalize marijuana. Proposition 47 in California would reclassify possession of heroin, methamphetamine and other illegal drugs, and theft of $950 or less, dropping them from a felony to a misdemeanor. In your minds eye, can you see a mugger in San Francisco holding a gun on a victim and saying, "949.00 dollars or your life!"Our Founding Fathers made absolutely sure that the tools and machinery which would guarantee "self governance" was not only a birthright but a tool to use to protect our way of life. Perhaps voting would seem to some to be a marginal measure or means to insure "life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness" but those are the same people who think the pursuit of happiness is legally getting high. "We need to save ourselves and our nation...Dude, got some more weed?" President Reagan used to say that just because someone disagrees with you 20% of the time doesn’t mean they are 20% your enemy. It means they are 80% your friend. The GOP needs to realize this. We need to stop cannibalizing our party during primaries and weakening our candidates way ahead of the general election. We need to stop voting for third parties as protest votes, effectively handing elections to the Democrats.Don't give up on America! The God who gave us life gave us liberty! Vote!!! Jim Morris
