rAs the country focused on the resignation of Attorney General Eric Holder, the most lawless attorney general this nation has ever seen, President Obama quietly issued an executive order to allow illegal immigrants to join the United States military. Though Obama has maintained that he intends to hold-off on broad, unconstitutional executive actions that would grant amnesty to millions of illegals who remain in the country in violation of our laws, the president did revise Department of Defense policy to allow illegal immigrants to join the ranks of the armed forces. According to militarytimes.com,
A small number of immigrants living in the U.S. illegally will have an opportunity to join the military for the first time in decades under a new Defense Department policy unveiled Thursday… For the first time, the program — known as Military Accessions Vital to National Interest, or MAVNI — will be open to immigrants without a proper visa if they came to the U.S. with their parents before age 16. More specifically, they must be approved under a 2012 Obama administration policy known as Deferred Action for Child Arrivals, or DACA. The new DoD policy may be the first phase of a broader governmentwide effort to ease pressure on immigrants and create new paths to citizenship. President Obama, frustrated with the failure of Congress to pass any substantial immigration reform, has vowed to aggressively use his presidential authority to change the way immigration policies are carried out. The Pentagon program is capped at 1,500 recruits per year. Officials say it’s unclear how many of those might be unlawful DACA status immigrants as opposed to others who are also eligible for military service under MAVNI, including those with legal, nonpermanent visas such as students or tourists. While this is not the broad, extralegal executive order for which Democrats and millions of illegals have been waiting, this is a new policy designed to undermine existing immigration laws. Though this is sure to enrage those who care about law and order in America, it seems Obama’s move wins him few friends on the other side of the debate. The pro-amnesty group America’s Voice blasted the new policy, saying “this foray into executive action is a fig leaf that pretends to help Dreamers but will, in fact, help virtually no one.” “The Obama Administration should go well beyond the MAVNI program and expand DACA and enlistment policies to include as many DREAMers and aspiring Americans possible,” the group said in a statement. “If today’s measure is any indication of the type of executive actions we can expect to see from the President after the elections, we are not impressed.” The Obama Administration is walking a tightrope on the issue of illegal immigration. They are putting-off an amnesty-oriented executive order until after the midterms, but in the meantime, are doing nothing to secure the border or enforce the current laws- which is, ironically, the chief responsibility of the executive branch.
