(LAKE BROWNWOOD, TX) - A Brown County resident recently broke the record for the largest flathead catfish ever caught by rod and reel in Lake Brownwood, according to the Texas Department of Parks and Wildlife online records. Russell Hair was fishing on his boat with his 4-year-old son on April 4th when he hooked the 41 pound fish that was 46.25 inches long and 29 inches around. The Texas Department of Parks and Wildlife says the previous record for a flathead catfish caught by rod and reel in Lake Brownwood was 31 pounds and 39.50 inches long. It was caught by Darvel Hutchins with a hotdog in 2010.
Hair says he was using an 18-pound test line with a crank bait when he made the record-breaking catch.
